Recent Retirees

My offensive powerhouse from the '70s (6 playoff appearances) is winding down and two of my regulars from the decade packed it in this past winter:

Cotton Bell - chosen 10th overall in 1966 Bell spent less than a year and a half in the minors. Bell was an All Star reserve at 1B in his second year before moving to the outfield. Never an elite player Bell nonetheless played 1499 over the course of 13 seasons and appeared in the post season 7 times.

Dale Easton - drafted 10th overall in 1964, as a 2B, Easton was also rushed to the majors to help fill the holes in a ravished Detroit line-up of the mid '60s. Easton was converted to SS in his 3rd season and was a marvelous defensive player throughout the course of his fifteen year career.

Easton only made one All Star team, 1972, but had some big offensive years, driving in over 100 runs twice, scoring over 100 three times. Easton stole 30 or more bases on 6 occasions and retires at #19 in LTB history with 380 SBs while finishing his career only 11 hits shy of 2,000.

Similarly, the Philadelphia powerhouse, winners of 5 of the past 6 WS appears to be winding down. After this group of retirements we had a total of 6 pitchers remaining plus 2 in the minors (including this season's draftees). We would certainly be looking for any pitching that is up for trade. Send all offers to the Philadelphia front office.

Paxton Neal chose to hang them up after the 1980 season.

Chosen 6th overall in the 1965 draft Neal never spent a day in the minors as he was rushed into a job as everyday 2B on a sorely depleted Devastation line-up.

Never a "star" Neal was a solid middle infielder over the course of his 16 seasons in Detroit, hitting over 20 homers on 6 occasions and twice driving in 100 runs in a season. His leadership and versatility will be missed.

If you want some stars quickly there, Philadelphia still has a few left that are movable.
