Boston 8 Minnesota 3

The sweep of Minnesota was very big for Boston who is now desperately trying to crowd back into playoff contention. With the potential addition of right hander Pete Keister to the already strong starting rotation on his return from injury, Boston could make the closing stretch very interesting.

Right hander Eddie Mountain won his second consecutive start after suffering through a miserable stretch of losing six straight games going six innings giving up four hits and three runs with two walks and five strikeouts.

Boston jumped all over former AAA farmhand, 32 yea old right hander, acquired by Minnesota in the trade for Keister.

Johnson walked lead off batter Doug Rigney to start the Boston first inning. Rigney immediately stole second and scored on Jose Morales liner to right field. Art Bradley followed with the second Boston hit sending Morales around to third base. Boston had the steal sign out early and often --- Bradley stole second.

Morales scored second Boston run on a sac-fly by Curt Dombrowski.

Bob Bishop's 10th home run scored Bradley ahead of himself for a 4-0 lead.

Four runs would have been enough run support for Mountain but Boston would add onto its lead and it was a good thing for Minnesota did have some fight in them as the game went on.

Minnesota scored two runs in the 4th inning. Tony Richardson singled, Hal Gleason tripled and scored on a ground out by Bernie Miller.

Red hot hitting catcher Jim Jerome's two-run home run that restored the original four run lead at 6-2.

Minnesota got one back in the 5th on a walk to Bill Levrault, singled by Pep Lonborg and the second run came in on a 6-4-3 double play turned by Boston.

Boston responded in the 6th. Pitcher Jose Tyson walked Rod Colby. Pinch hitter Fletcher Browning doubled [past first and down into the right field corner.

A pitching change saw Shane Jenkins replace Tyson (2.1 inning 2 hits 2 runs both earned 1 walk 2 strikeout).

Doug Rigney greeted Jenkins with a single to left field that scored Browning. The inning ended on a spectacular play at the plate when left fielder Pep Matuszak threw out Rigney at the plate. That made the final; Boston 8-3.

In other American League action both of the top two teams lost.

First place Chicago dropped the final game of their three game set to New York. Joe Hamill (8-3) went 8.2 innings for New York allowing 3 runs on 5 hits.

Howie Slusarski hit his 12th for Chicago with no one on in the 7th inning.

Jonah Rohrmeier hit his 9th with two on in ther 6th for New York.

Seattle downed Oakland 9-6.

Detroit broke through out of a two game losing streak with a 10-5 pounding of Kansas City.
