As the season winds down to its final half dozen games three teams remain in the hunt for the two big prizes warded at the nd, the league championship and the wild card.

Kansas City won the rubber game of a three game series with Detroit 4-3 thus insuring that the Royals would own a one game advantage over defensing champion Boston going into the final series of the season between the two teams.

Todd Main started for Kansas City and surrendered two runs on five hits over seven innings with eight strikeouts and two walks.

Main gave way to Mike Rafter for 1.1 innings. Detroit had one run on three hits off the right hand reliever acquired earlier this season in a trade.

Detroit took a 3-2 lead in the top of the ninth inning. Cesar Fulgram, Bud Anderson and Robin Northey all singled to produce the run.

Paul Bohne, Kansas City's jack of all trades pitcher, took over from Rafter with one out and choke off any further scoring which gave Kansas City a fighting chance of staging a rally in the bottom of the ninth.

In that decisive inning Zeke Quinton singled to ignite the rally. Garry Klinger's ground out to first advanced Quinton to second. Losing pitcher Jim Millies (1-5) walked both Carlton Bragg and Keon Clark to load the bases. Randy Person hit a fly ball to center that scored the winning run.

Bohne (7-3) got the victory.

Kansas City opened its final home series of the season against arch-rival Boston, an opponent that they had a 4-5 record against head to head this season.

Raul Iglesias went eight innings allowed four hits no runs one walk and recorded five strikeouts.

The only run of the game was scored in the bottom of the 4th inning by Kansas City. Jonathon Jones and Domingo Grimes had consecutive doubles with no one out.

Oakland stayed three games out with a 4-1 win over Baltimore.

Boots Adams (10-3) went eight innings (five hits and one run eight strikeouts two walks. Harl Coleman's scoreless effort in the bottom of the ninth garnered his save number 18.

Third baseman Glenn White had three hits and Damaso Escalara hit his fifth homerun for Oakland.
