LA Dodgers 9 Baltimore 5 .... Both managers tossed before game....

July 30, 2017 at 11:04PM View BBCode

The Dodgers continue to roll on winning their 30th game on their last 36.

The latest win was a 9-5 slugfest at Dodger Stadium before a crowd of 52,000.

However, the umpires sent both managers home early with a note for misbehaving during the pregame meeting to exchange lineup cards. An argument suddenly erupted in the normally unvaried uneventful meeting and grew more and more heated to the surprise of the umpiring crew who finally had to get between the two and that led to both screaming at the umpires who reacted with what works best in cases like that and gave them the old heave-ho.

After the game a reporter brought the matter was brought up to umpire Ron Luciano who basically body slammed Dodger manager Chick Wade. ''Oh,'' he said, contemplating his words carefully, '' As you probably know well, umpiring is best defined as the profession of standing between two seven years olds with one ice cream cone.....So there we were discussing chocolate ice cream ...one said that chocolate ice cream tasted better and the other made the claim that it was less filling...and from there they went fist city with me and my kind just standing there thinking about how we all were partial to vanilla. Hell of a distraction. So we sent them home early''

The ballgame that followed with bench coach Allen McPherson at the helm of the Dodgers and bullpen coach Snuffy Freeman in the dugout calling the shots for Baltimore was one that saw good defensive plays by the Dodger outfield saved starting pitcher Johnny Clark time and time again.

Clark was hammered for eleven hits over five and two thirds innings and charged with five runs. But four some good defensive play in the outfield it could have been worse.

Baltimore's 8th place hitter, catcher Johnnie Cruz led off the top of the third with a single that dropped softly to the grass in front of left fielder Joe Raymond Schallock put down a perfect bunt moving Cruz to second.

After Larry Haney fanned for the second out, Jimmy Linke doubled to right field scoring Cruz. Benny Blaylock singled to left field. Joe Raymond fielded the ball quickly and his return throw to the infield held Linke at third base.*

Felix Morales was called out on strikes ending the inning and stranding some important runners to keep the score at 1-0.

The Dodger scored in the bottom of that inning with the help of an error by third baseman Leo Grabowski. Don Thompson reached second on the throwing error with one out. Clark failed to get a bunt down and struck out.

Schallock came close to striking out Lou Covington to end the threat but instead grooved an 0-2 pitch which Covington laced into left field for a run scoring single to tie the game 1-1.

Clark continued to give up hits. In the top of the 4th Jeff Hofman singled and Cruz doubled with two outs putting runners on second and third. Hofman, the lead runner stopped at third because of an great play by right fielder Jerry Garrido who throw to catcher Don Thompson was right on target.*

The pitcher, Schallock, hit for himself then, and popped out to third base.

The good defensive efforts moved the game's momentum all into the Dodger dugout.

Ed Fryman, a hot hitter, singled to right field with no one out. Jim Onslow hit his seventh homerun of the season (second in the series). Raymond singled to left. Could not advance on a ground out to second by Bobby Knoop Jr.

Garrido struck out for the second out.

A two out single by Thompson scored the third run putting Los Angeles ahead 4-1.

Clark could not hold that lead.

In the top of the 5th inning Linke and Haney came up with singles putting runners on first and third. Blalock's ground out got one run in. 4-2.

Bill Martinez singled but Haney was thrown out at the plate by Dodger right fielder Jerry Garrido.*

Baltimore did finally knock Clark out of the game and take the lead in the top of the 6th inning.

Grabowski and Hofman singled putting runners on first and third with nobody out.

Clark walked Cruz to fill the bases. Schallock popped out to shortstop.

Linke's smash seemed headed for right field until Knoop dove headlong for the ball fielded it and came up throwing for the out*. Grabowski scored on the play, the other runners advanced a base.

Haney's single that followed got both runners in to score and give Baltimore one of the few leads it has held in this series. 5-4.

John Reed replaced Clark and struck out Blaylock to end the inning.

Reed stayed in to pitch a scoreless seventh after the Dodgers tied the game in the bottom of the sixth on singles by Onslow and Raymond.

Jim Browder took over for the eighth and gave up nothing on two ground outs and a strikeout.

The Dodgers took control in the bottom of the eighth scoring four times off Ken Shamley.

Raymond singled to left. Pinch hitter Don Gleason batted for Knoop and singled to left field. Raymond to third base.

Garrido singled home Raymond .. Gleason went to third. Gleason scored on a sacrifice fly by Don Thompson.

Ron Blaszkowski walked one, struck out one and got a game ending double play ball to end the game.

Final 9-5 Los Angeles.....
